As an initiator of the annual human rights conference (HRC), The Centre for Human Rights, Multiculturalism, and Migration (CHRM2) Universitas Jember, together with the Faculty of Law of Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) and Sydney Southeast Asia Centre (SSEAC) University of Sydney successfully hosted the 9th HRC in the Faculty of Law, UNS, Central Java from 10 to 12 August 2026. This year’s HRC brought an interesting theme “Peace, Security, and Environmental Justice in Asia: Advancing Human Dignity for Sustainable Futures”. There were 273 presenters attended and presented their paper at the HRC, representing academia, practitioners, researchers, university students, and human rights defenders.
The HRC offered 48 panels with 5 side events such as Fellowship on Freedom or Belief, Dissemination of human rights standard by the Indonesian National Commission of Human Rights (KOMNAS HAM), Academic writing workshop by PKR Hak Asasi Manusia, and Music for justice by Centre for Critical Law Studies (CCLS). Another side event is the Course on Access to Justice which was held back-to-back with the conference. There were 22 participants of the Course who attended the HRC before they are awarded a certificate of attendance. The two days conference also offered three plenaries co-organised by the KOMNAS HAM, Faculty of Law of UNS, and No Leprosy Remains (NLR) Indonesia.
The HRC’s closing was marked by HRC participant networking and the handing of the next year’s conference which will be hosted by Faculty of Law of Hasanuddin University, South Sulawesi. The CHRM2 Director, Dr. Al Khanif closed the conference and handed over the next year’s conference to the dean of Law Faculty of Hasanuddin University, Prof. Hamzah Halim.
