Since 2016, the establishment of the Centre for Human Rights, Multiculturalism, and Migration (CHRM2) one of its missions is to boost human rights promotion in Indonesia through education, research, and community services. As part of these objectives, CHRM2, together with the Faculty of Law and HURIP Foundation successfully co-organised a roundtable discussion on the role of parliament in advancing human rights in Indonesia. the event was held two days from 15 to 16 September at the Faculty of Law of the Universitas Jember. The roundtable discussion was proposed by inter-parliamentary cooperation body or known as BKSAP, a unit in the central parliament of Indonesia.
BKSAP proposed a collaboration with CHRM2 to host this event as part of their preparation to attend the Inter parliamentary union (IPU) conference on human rights in Geneva, Swiss in this coming November.
The two days event discussed three panels. The first panel is how parliament responds democratic regression in Indonesia as shown by the shrinking of space for civic expression in public. The second panel discussed the right to the child from legal and empirical perspective while the last panel explored the right of persons with disabilities especially their right to work and other social rights. Four researchers of CHRM2 attended and presented their perspectives during this event. They are Dr. Al Khanif as the director of the Centre, accompanied by three researchers, Dr. Erwin Nur Rifah, Dina Tsalist Wildana and Agus Wijayanto.
