On February 18, 2025, CHRM2 research fellows Wendy Zhou, Skaidra Pulley, and Nicolas Nishiyama were invited by Universitas Islam Cordoba in Banyuwangi to speak at a sharing session: “Living Across Culture, Practical Do’s and Don’ts For Global Citizens.”
The event brought together UI Cordoba faculty, administrators, and first-year students, along with over 270 attendees on Zoom. Drawing from their own experiences and challenges living abroad in Morocco, Singapore, Japan, Indonesia, and beyond, the fellows offered practical insights for students to be better prepared for cross-cultural experiences, whether for study, research, or work abroad. Some of the key points they highlighted include the importance of learning about local issues and histories, recognizing unequal power dynamics, setting short- and long-term goals, and embracing risks when moving abroad.
During their visit to Banyuwangi with the UI Cordoba team, the fellows also engaged with junior high students in the Cordova International Class and the Lazuardi Tursina School. They shared their motivations for pursuing research work in the social sciences, and offered words of advice to encourage students to cultivate their curiosity, confidence, and a global perspective.
